Gas Utility Construction Planner

Summary: Leading provider of Supply Chain contract services to the Utilities (Gas & Electric) sector seeks experienced gas utility planners to join their expanding organization. This position is located in Pasadena, California. Ideal candidate will have extensive experience working on construction sketches a keen ability to read and interpret utility maps and prints. Performs gas field planning work required for the construction or maintenance of new and replacement mains and services in gas distribution systems. Prepares necessary material take offs, sketches and drawings, estimates and notes. May obtain work permits and easements. The candidate will determine what types of materials are needed, at what location and how they fit together, etc and then will create the work order in SAP and provides a rough sketch. Site visits will be required. We are looking at filling several of these positions for our customer.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Conduct job site visits and perform thorough reviews of Company systems of record necessary to plan the replacement of medium pressure gas mains and gas services in accordance with Company and regulatory requirements. Company systems of record include, but are not limited to GIS, SAP, and SAP Service History.
  • Prepare Base Sketches utilizing GIS/GWD to show property ownership, substructures, and other preliminary information needed to plan the replacement, relocation or addition of main pipelines and services.
  • Development of construction sketches utilizing GIS/GWD per Company’s sketching and mapping requirements. Sketches will identify required construction material; satisfy agency permitting requirements and ROW/easements; provide all necessary information for appropriate field construction; and meet Company reconciliation and mapping requirements.
  • Plan construction for the replacement of medium pressure gas main lines and service lines through the use of Company’s SAP Construction Planning & Design module including the creation of Notifications, Construction Measures, and Compatible Planning Units.
  • Engagement, communication, and coordination with key Company Operations and Technical Services personnel to conduct necessary project reviews and approvals as well as address any questions that may arise from projects that may be in construction or reconciliation.
  • Training will be provided and is a five (5) weeks gas standards and methods course provided by Southern California Gas Company. Training provides the knowledge necessary to perform the job as outlined in the Job Description. Training is on a pass/fail basis and includes several timed tests and work assignments. After class study is required to successfully pass the course. Only candidates who pass training will be allowed to continue work as a Gas Utility Construction Planner.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in civil or mechanical engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with engineering principles, construction standards, and industry practices in underground utilities.
  • Previous Southern Cal Gas Company experience a plus!
  • Previous experience in engineering design for underground utilities (gas, electric, telecommunications, sewer, water, etc.).
  • Knowledge of construction practices and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps and prints to identify the type, size and purpose of underground utilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Willing and able to work in or near Pasadena, CA.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Provide your own work vehicle to travel to job sites within 50 miles of project headquarters. (Reimbursement at the IRS Federal rate)
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience preparing work orders and construction plans for gas utility projects.
  • Experience using SAP for preparing work orders and construction plans for utility projects.
  • Experience using GIS/GWD to develop base sketches and construction sketches.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Southern California Gas Company gas standards for medium pressure gas main lines and service lines.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and compliance activity related to the installation and maintenance of underground utilities.
